About
Tami Soji-Akinyemi’s practice explores the agency of marking-making in relation to the shifting contexts of image, language and matter. Systems of knowledge and communication are excavated and reimagined; questioning their value and function, and mining connections between the immaterial and material worlds.
Her making processes speak to the concerns of a black-feminist perspective, as agentic tools of un-doing and re-making become devices for engaging with potentialities that arise within fragmented and illegible allegories. Informed by her background in fashion, her haptic puncture paintings encode text, symbols and images into material surfaces - creating compositional dynamics of diagrammatic matrices.
Drawing from disparate subconscious, cultural and archival references; her work asserts, records, transmits and remixes the essence of life in progress in all its hazy complexity.
Primarily working between painting and textiles, her expanded practice includes applications in installation, sculpture and sound.
