Painting (at the moment)

Group show featuring works by Ada Egg Koskiluoma, Akshay Bhoan, Ben Coleman, Daniel Shafiani, Gabrielle Bejani, Galen Riley, Tami Soji-Akinyemi, Nima Shafiani and Yuecen Wang.

I wrote a self-directed text ‘at the moment (before) ~ at the moment (after)’ in response to this show.

(Excerpt of press release)

What is important is if this exhibition LEADS SOMEWHERE.

If it leads people to contact each other and attend protests

If it leads people to want to make things with their hands.

If it leads people to call a friend or distant relative.

If it leads people to cook together in a group.

If it leads people to pick up a book.

If it leads people to think about the potential of painting.

If it leads people to go spray paint around the city.

If it leads people to discuss what skill/tools they can share.

I think every artwork in this exhibition is painting.

Even if it is made with carpet underlay.

Even if it is made from layers of textured paper.

Even if it is made with electrical projection.

Even if it is made by piercing holes into fabric.

Even if it is scrap papers collected and made into collage.

Even if it is writing on the wall.

Arranging and managing our time/skills/ tools at hand is painting,

painting is about making decisions and layering images,

handling ideas and materials with care.

And learning methods to visually describe the world we live in.

My mentor, Bonnie at college said:

“listen, I think you are trying to figure out the difference between sharing and showing”

This 0207 Gallery project is about sharing NOT showing.
